At 12:05hrs on Sunday, November 17th. Yorktown Heights Fire was dispatched to the 300 blk of Spring Pond Rd for the reported brush fire.
Car 2532, Engine 271, Engine 274, Tanker 14, Mini-Attack 8 and Engine 270 with over 2 dozen Yorktown Heights Volunteer Firefighters responded on the assignment.
While en-route, a column could be scene in the distance and multiple updates were received stating the fire was possibly coming within close proximity to a structure.
YHFD units arrived to find a brush fire burning in a wooded area between two residences extending towards one of the homes.
YHFD volunteers stretched 2 hoselines to begin extinguishment while other members worked to create a “fire line” and remove debris ahead of the rapidly growing fire to stop its forward progress deeper into the wooded area and towards a residence. A “nursing operation” with “booster backups” was conducted by E271, T14, & E274 to establish a positive water supply.
The fire was contained with no damage to any structures.
Again, we’d like to remind all residents NYS DEC has issued a statewide burn ban until November 30th. This burn ban prohibits the starting of outdoor fires statewide for purposes of brush and debris disposal, as well as uncontained campfires, and open fires used for cooking. Numerous red flag warnings have continuously been issued for our area due to the current drought and weather conditions that are favorable for rapid fire spread.
