At 12:15hrs, Yorktown Heights Fire was dispatched to a reported “large brush fire” on Saw Mill River Rd (NYS Rt 118) in the area of Hanover St.
Car 2532, Engines 271, 272, 273, 274, Tanker 14 & Mini-Attack 8 responded on the assignment.
YHFD units arrived to find a brush fire in a wooded area off Rt 118 rapidly extending due to high wind conditions towards a DEP boat site and running parallel along the reservoir.
YHFD units stretched multiple handlines, and forestry lines to begin extinguishing the fire and cut multiple “fire lines” to stop its forward progress. Due to this area lacking municipal water mains. A “nursing operating” was conducted with multiple “booster backups” from E-272, E-271, E-274, E-273, and Tanker 14 that performed a few tanker shuttles to maintain a positive water supply.
NYC DEP was requested with heavy equipment
to move burning fallen trees/ logs further into the already burned areas within our fire line and allowed for YHFD members to extinguish the deeper seeded fires burning in the underbrush below the pile.
All YHFD units cleared the scene around 15:00hrs.
Just after clearing that incident, YHFD units were dispatched with our UTV at 15:23hrs to the scene of another large brush fire in Montrose. C-2532, MA-8 and U-253 (UTV) responded and operated with multiple agencies until nightfall. C-2533 with E-271, E-272, & E-274 handled multiple additional calls in district while the units operated in Montrose.
To round out the night, C-2533 & E-274 provided fire suppression coverage with the Bedford Hills Fire Department for the West Harrison Fire Department
from 17:30hrs-2300hrs. While E-274 was in West Harrison. C-2532, E-271, E-272 & T-14 took in additional runs back in district before their return.
