Prospective Members Guide


YHFD Membership Application


The Application Process

  1. Fill out the Member Inquiry Form located above to be initially contacted by a YHFD Firefighter. 
  2. Read the Prospective Membership Guide in its entirety. It has been designed to answer most questions you could have. 
  3. The Application Form: 
    1. Come by Station 1 (1916 Commerce St in Yorktown Heights) on any Monday night between 6pm - 9pm, ask to speak to a Membership Committee member, and to pick up an application packet.
    2. Or, download, print, and fill out the application.
    3. There is a $25.00 application fee that must be paid when you submit your application.
  4. Membership Applications are only accepted twice a year:
    1. January 1st - March 1st, and; 
      July 1st - September 1st
    2. During this time, return the application and the $25 fee to Station 1 on any Monday night between 6:00-9:00pm. Ask for a member of the membership committee, a Lieutenant, or a Captain.
  5. Applications (including the $25 check) are only processed twice a year: March and September.
    1. Your intent to join will be first be introduced and read off at the Monthly Engine Company meeting (1st Tuesday of March, or September).
    2. Your application will then be posted for a period of 30 days.
    3. The Membership Committee will contact you to schedule an interview during that 30 day period. You are required to attend this meeting to move forward with processing. 
  6. At the next April or October Engine Company Meeting, the Membership Committee will present their findings from your interview to the Engine Company, and you’ll be voted on as a Probationary Member. A member of the Membership committee will contact you with the results of the company vote after the meeting.
  7. Pending a passing vote, you’ll then be required to attend the Yorktown Heights Fire District’s Board of Fire Commissioners meeting the next week (2nd Tuesday of every month).
    1. You will be interviewed by the Board of Fire Commissoners;
    2. Receive your Background Check packet, and;
    3. Be granted permission to get your department physical
  8. Pending your department physical, and passing the background check, the Fire District will conditionally approve your membership as a firefighter
  9. Once you’ve passed both the background check and department physical, and are approved by the Fire District, you are officially a Probationary Firefighter and you will begin the one year probationary period following the completion of our Probationary Firefighter Orientation Program.
